Switzerland is not only the land of bankers, watchmakers, Swarovski rhinestones and chocolate. Here is the breathtaking beauty of nature. God, creating this land, endowed the inhabitants with great diligence and talents. And to make it more pleasant for them to work, he created breathtaking landscapes around them. Beginning in the XIX century, when mountain tourism (and then skiing) arose, travelers from different countries began to leave a lot of money in the pockets of the Swiss. Today we will talk about one of the most amazing sights of this alpine region.
Reichenbach Falls are not the highest and most powerful in the world. But he entered the classics of world literature. Anyone who read out in his youth detectives by Arthur Conan Doyle, remembers that it was here that the battle broke out for life and death between the main character Sherlock Holmes and Professor Moriarty.Let's pay tribute to the hobbies of our youth and take a virtual journey to the cascade of Reichenbachfälle.
The highest and most powerful waterfalls in the world
Large streams, which are champions on our planet, are located, alas, not in Europe. Niagara, Victoria and Angel are widely known, but to see them you have to go a long way. But if we expand the boundaries of record holders and consider the twenty of the most beautiful, powerful and raging waterfalls, then Europe is in the lead. Eight of the highest flows are located in Norway, one each - in France and North Ossetia (six-meter Zeigalan). If we put the criterion of power at the forefront, then another Swiss landmark is in the lead - the Rhine Falls. Every second he spews six hundred cubic meters of water. Icelandic Dettifoss ranked second (500 cubic meters per second). And, finally, the most beautiful waterfalls in Europe. These are Powerscourt (Ireland), Newpeskar (Sweden), Valaste (Estonia), Cascata delle Marmore (Italy), Krimmler (Austria) and Reichenbach (Switzerland) already mentioned by us.
Where is the Reichenbach Falls (Switzerland)
This incredible miracle created by nature itself, is located near the town of Wiehlengen, two kilometers from Meiringen. It is somewhere halfway between two major cities - Lucerne and Interlaken. An old funicular runs from Meiringen to Reichenbach Falls. The coordinates of this Swiss landmark are: 46 ° 42′49 ″ north latitude and 8 ° 10′57 ″ east longitude.
In fact, Reichenbach is not really a waterfall, but a large cascade. Its total height is two hundred and fifty meters. He is considered one of the highest and most powerful waterfalls in the Alps. The entourage that surrounds Reichenbach is appropriate: majestic Alpine peaks in earflaps of non-flowing glaciers, numerous streams, medieval villages ... The Aare River broke through the waterfall, rushing further into a narrow gorge. It is located in the very center of Gaslitala (Valley of the Dwarfs), and to the west of it is the beautiful Lake Brienz.

Attractions Reichenbach waterfall
At the top station of the funicular hangs a route map of Arthur Conan Doyle. When the famous British writer visited here, he thought that this particular landscape is worthy of the death of his favorite character - Detective Sherlock Holmes. The Reichenbach Falls tumble down from almost sheer black rocks, raising a cloud of spray at the bottom, so that the suspension is held in the air by some kind of fog. If you descend back along the side of the mountain opposite to the movement of the funicular, you can get to the historic site, where the battle, described in the story “The Last Holmes Case”, took place. Here is a memorial plaque. By the way, it was not the famous Swiss waterfall that was shown to the Soviet audience, but the domestic one — Gegsky, located in Abkhazia. At the bottom of the site can not be long without a rain cover.
Two streams merge nearby, and a water suspension hangs from the force of the collision in the air. Be sure to walk up one of the Arthur Conan Doyle routes up, because the height of the waterfall, as we remember, is 250 meters. At the top observation deck, you can go to the panoramic restaurant Gasthaus Zwirgi and enjoy the specialty of the Fondu witch.
The nearest town, Meiringen, is home to meringue - meringue made from powdered sugar and whipped egg whites. And here Conan Doyle lived in a local hotel for several days. Now this is a writer's museum with a fully preserved Victorian living room. Reichenbach Falls itself is located in an amazing area. You can go along the narrow gorge of the Aare river to the valley of Rosenlaui or to Lake Brienz.
