June Beetle: Pest, after whom the cocktail was named
The June beetle - this name is popularly given to several species of insects, which people are used to often observe in summer. First of all, it is June jellyfish, it is common nephrus, as well as various types of Khrushchev, Khruschikov and Bronzovok. As a rule, all these bugs belong to the pests that are being actively controlled.
What does the June beetle look like
Most often, under the name "June beetle" means the June Khrushchev, which is also called nonhrusche ordinary and even nonhrusty Khrusche. It belongs to the order of Coleoptera of the family of plate insects. The size of an adult individual, as a rule, is from fourteen to eighteen millimeters, the color is brown, and its elytra has a glossy light yellow shade. The body of the beetle is densely covered with brownish-yellow hairs.
The period of flight of these beetles is extended, it lasts from one to one and a half months, and falls in June-July.Five to ten days after hatching from pupae, adults mate. After that, the females burrow into the soft soil, where eggs are laid. The larvae hatching from them develop in the soil. Twenty to thirty days after their birth, they molt. From May to October, they are mostly kept in the surface layer of the soil and often winter there. The larvae migrate wintering twice, passing through three stages of their development. At the end of the third stage, they pupate, remaining in this phase two to four weeks.
The June beetle beetle is found almost everywhere. The geographical area of its distribution covers most of the European territory of Russia, Siberia, as well as the Caucasus. The biological plasticity of this species is extremely high. In this regard, the June beetle, although it prefers well warmed up areas of soil near coniferous forests, can settle in various places.
In the northern regions of Western Siberia and Altai, the generation of the June beetle, usually two years old, develops for three years. In the latter case, the summer years are expressed especially well.
Since the duration of periods of development at different stages is not the same, in the same population there are individuals of different ages.
The harmfulness of the June beetle
In fact, an ordinary nekhrushch - the June beetle, the photo of which is presented below - despite the deceptively cute "fluffy" appearance, is far from being harmless. Feeding on the roots of woody plants, it causes them considerable damage.
Its larvae can severely damage the roots of seedlings of various tree species in nurseries, especially if the care of young plants is not thorough. Very often, the population of the June Khrushcha meets together with other, in particular, May Khrushchev, which is why their harmful effect is intensified.
In order to prevent outbreaks of mass reproduction of the June Khrushchev, it is necessary to observe them visually throughout the summer, determining the intensity of the flight at one time or another and tracking the time of appearance of adult individuals. The population density for the larvae of each age is determined by the method of soil excavation, which is carried out in the first half of summer, and then in August.
Measures to combat the June rape should be comprehensive. This includes the protection of the root systems of young plants when planting forest crops, and chemical tillage of soil with special compounds, and the fight against adult individuals in the flying years with the help of chemical agents. It is also recommended to dig as much as possible the upper layers of the soil in places where the June beetle is common, to collect larvae. The combination of these methods of struggle, as a rule, gives good results.
Cocktail "June bug"
The bright coloring of one of the species of beetles, popularly called "June" - bronze - once inspired T.G.I.Friday's famous restaurant chain to create a new drink.
