Bee trap: do it yourself
When you decide to create your own apiary, the main question arises: “Where can I get a swarm?”. If the budget allows, then the easiest way is to buy a family from beekeepers. If it is necessary to minimize costs, they are interested in catching a stray swarm. How to catch him? A bee trap helps you create your own apiary!
Why do bees fly into such traps?
In the spring, the beekeeper is difficult to keep track of the numerous swarm. It happens that some families of bees fly away in search of another home. A young swarm, having grown from its native hive, has been seeking shelter in the vicinity for several days. After 4-5 days, he flies farther, to where the scout bees are pointing. Most often, a new place is a bee trap.
Such a small house for a wild swarm can be bought on the market or in a specialty store. But the best way to learn how to do it yourself. After all, there is nothing complicated. In addition, you will significantly save your family budget. There are several basic characteristics. The bee trap should be light, small, easy to handle, quick to manufacture, economical, and it should also be easily and firmly attached to the tree.
Making a bee trap requires the right approach. First you need to decide on its size. The design can have both square and oval, round or rectangular shape. As a rule, it does not play an important role in catching the family of bees. But the box-shaped trap is the most convenient and versatile. The length of the standard frame for bees in depth is 470 mm. As for the width, if you install five frames, use a frame with a length of 190 mm, if six - 230 mm, seven - 265 mm, eight - 300 mm.
Making bee traps
So, now you need to start working directly. The skeleton of the future trap should be made of slats with a section of 20x20 mm. Sheathe gradually plywood or double-sided fiberboard. Together with the sides of the bee trap you need to make a roof, and then put it on the body directly. Fasten all the two pins and tie them to the cover. Now you need to make a handle for carrying. It is usually attached from above.
It is not enough to make a frame and upholster it with plywood. For the bees need a real house, in which they would fall. So, in the lower part of the trap you need to cut the entrance, which, if necessary, could be closed with a valve. In order to avoid collapse of the structure, the box should be covered with two-layer drying oil. Honeycombs trapped for bees must be pumped out, of a dark color. Thus, the trap should look like a real beehive - intelligence bees will lead the uterus and the rest of the family. Do not put in the design of honey. It does not attract bees, but other insects will be very happy about it.
From mid-May to the end of June, it often happens that a young swarm flies away from the host. Thus, it is this period that is ideally suited for hunting the bee family. Thick branchy trees are preferable for setting traps. It is best to choose a place near the forest in the shade. The branch to which you attach the structure should be strong, about 8–9 m long. After you tie the trap, climb the tree and pull it to yourself 5 m, tied to a strong long bitch. Do not forget to leave a place for bees before the entrance.
After all the work is done, do not forget about the trap. Check it 2-3 times a week. If you already found tenants there, you were lucky - the bee trap worked! Carefully remove the design with the bees from the knot and close the entrance. It is best to do this after sunset. Transfer the trap to the apiary, put it in a dark, cool place and begin to replant the swarm into the hive that has been prepared in advance.
